To improve trainee and practicing providers’ education and understanding of AAN clinical practice guidelines using the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) approach to quality improvement.

Clinical practice guidelines are evidence based recommendations developed to assist practitioners in the decision making process. The 好色先生 (AAN) has created guidelines on various common and uncommon neurological topics.  Exposure to these guidelines, however, is often self-driven and easily overlooked amidst busy clinic schedules and inpatient duties. Thus, strategies to increase exposure to these guidelines in a structured setting are needed.

On a monthly basis, AAN guidelines were presented by a resident and moderated by a faculty member using standard video conferencing. Relevant material was shared beforehand. The entire Neurology department was encouraged to attend although the majority of participants were residents. Participants were asked to complete a short, multiple-choice pretest based on pertinent content from the guideline. The same questions were asked at the end of the presentation. Responses were pooled to evaluate variation and overall understanding of the topic. Descriptive statistics were performed using Microsoft Excel.

To date, four sessions have been completed. A total of 27 individuals have completed the pretest and 24 completed the post-test. The difference was attributed to dropout during the presentation. Responses to 13 questions were recorded and analyzed. Overall, participants’ average score increased from 42% (SD = 15%) to 93% (SD = 12%), t(24)= -8.60, p < .001.
Preliminary data from this local quality improvement project suggests that review of AAN guidelines through video slideshow presentation can be an effective means of improving provider understanding of evidence-based approaches to various Neurologic conditions.
