2015 Annual Meeting | The Dynamic Brain in Health and Disease: Plasticity and Reprogramming

Wednesday 04/22/15
02:00 PM - 06:00 PM Add To Calendar
This program will be presented both in-person and online
This program is not expected to be available in the meeting's On Demand product.
Integrated Neuroscience
Mark F. Mehler, MD, FAAN, Mark W. Albers, MD, PhD
Aging, Dementia, and Behavioral Neurology, Cerebrovascular Disease and Interventional Neurology, Child Neurology and Developmental Neurology, Neuro-rehabilitation, Movement Disorders, Neuro-oncology
Participants will have an understanding of the physiologic and pathophysiologic diversity in the genome of single neurons within the human brain and an appreciation of the implications the impact of these mechanisms of diversity generation required to carry out the complex functions of the brain on the initiating and propagating mechanisms for neurologic disease. For instance, the role of mobile elements in the human genome to create genomics diversity within neurons during development and neuronal repair processes will be discussed as well as unregulated genomic perturbations via these mobile elements as an initiating or propagating mechanism for disease.

Participants will also have an appreciation of the generation of diversity on neural cell types through cellular reprogramming in the brain in vivo. Recent advances in our understanding to alter the identity of new cells born within the brain during development and in the adult brain, within 鈥渃ritical periods鈥 of maximum plasticity that may be exploited for therapeutic purposes. In addition, participants will gain insights into neurologic disease pathogenesis and therapy that stem from iPS and direct cellular reprogramming from patients into neuronal subclasses that are relevant to the disease of interest (e.g. motor neurons from ALS; thalamocortical neurons in sleep disorders)

Participants will also gain an appreciation of the means that neurons respond to changes in network activity, including alterations of gene expression via directed movement of chromosomes within the nucleus, and via RNA biology. In addition, modulation of network learning that underlies motor recovery from acute injuries such as stroke and TBI, and the coupling local neural circuit activity related to social behavioral states with the rates of neurogenesis and integration of new neurons into the hippocampus will be discussed.
