Continuum is one of the most important educational outlets we have as an Academy,” said Editor-in-Chief Lyell K. Jones, MD, FAAN. “It covers continuing medical education needs, but it is also a foundational education tool for people who are learning neurology for the first time. Resident board members provide a key perspective that we wouldn’t get anywhere else—that of Junior members of the Academy.”

Responsibilities of the editorial board include shaping the direction of Continuum, providing topic and guest editor suggestions, and reviewing and evaluating issues. The resident member will be required to attend board meetings in the spring and fall of their terms.

Current resident editorial board member Miguel Silva Miranda, MD, called the experience “inspiring and enriching.”

“The opportunity to contribute to one of the leading educational resources in neurology has been incredibly fulfilling,” Miranda said. “Becoming acquainted with the editorial process of a medical journal, assisting in reviewing issues and podcast episodes, has helped me develop soft skills that are highly relevant to our medical career.”

While collaborating with passionate, experienced medical educators was a source of inspiration for Miranda, the key part of the role—providing a resident’s perspective—was what made it most worthwhile.

“Representing fellow residents and bringing their feedback to board meetings has been a pleasure, adding a meaningful layer of advocacy to this role, further solidifying its value to me both personally and professionally,” he said.

Responsibilities

This is a two-year term requiring an average of one to two hours of work per month, plus the two required meetings. Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the mission and vision of Continuum

  • Serving as a peer reviewer on one upcoming issue per term
  • Participating in conference calls with other editorial board members on relevant issues as they arise throughout the year
  • Working with the editor-in-chief to set the publication schedule at least one year in advance
  • Suggesting, reviewing, and approving proposals and policies for Continuum
  • Serving on small work groups for special projects
