Raising Awareness about Acute Stroke Care in Chicago: The Primary Stroke Center (PSC) Mini-Internship Program
Cerebrovascular Disease and Interventional Neurology
P01 - (-)
220
BACKGROUND: Data shows that less than half of stroke patients would call 911 if a stroke were occurring, and many are unaware of the role of Primary Stroke Centers (PSC). A program that educates high-risk communities and their leaders on the use of 911 is clearly needed.
DESIGN/METHODS: Partnering with the Chicago Medical Society (CMS), we developed a half day Mini-Internship Program (MIP) to deliver community education program using an onsite hospital-based approach at PSCs. The on-site component includes raising awareness of (1) stroke rates, (2) stroke signs and symptoms, (3) potentially modifiable risk factors, and (4) tours of emergency departments, stroke units, and rehabilitation units. At each tour point, participants and medical teams discuss the successes and challenges involved in PSCs.
RESULTS: We have toured 5 PSCs, and received extremely positive feedback. Questionnaires assessed knowledge of stroke and PSCs prior to the MIP. Each PSC developed a unique format for site tours. The CMS showcases these tours in its Chicago Medicine magazine. MIP program directors (NTA and SP) contribute monthly stroke related articles to the magazine and the website (www.cmsdocs.org). Community meetings to discuss strokes have been scheduled as a result.
CONCLUSIONS: The MIP's work to-date presents a powerful approach for enhancing stroke health and treatment awareness. Involving community members, particularly minorities, requires approaches that recognize unique cultural and medical features, and can improve awareness and treatment of strokes.
