Tiered-skill, targeted education on Multiple Sclerosis: An evaluation study of educational impact
Multiple Sclerosis
MS and CNS Inflammatory Disease Posters (7:00 AM-5:00 PM)

To assess the influence of online continuing medical education (CME) in addressing clinician uptake of knowledge, and self-report of positive impact on competence and clinical behavior related to Multiple Sclerosis (MS) care and management.
Since clinicians hold varying MS skill levels, we designed tailored education to meet HCP learning needs at different stages of expertise. One activity provides foundational learning for novice clinicians, introducing the concept of personalized medicine in MS and exploring polypharmacy. The 2nd/3rd activities are for intermediate to expert-level clinicians; they take a deeper look at personalized medicine with a particular emphasis on the updated understanding of MS neuropathology and implications for biomarkers, as well as the use of high-efficacy agents.
Three 60-min. CME activities launched live-online in July - September, 2020, to remain on-demand through March, 2021. Knowledge/competence questions were administered pre-, post-, and 2 mos. post-activity. Responses from learner polling, and 2 mos. follow-up surveys were analyzed for engagement, lessons learned, and continuing gaps. McNemar tests compared matched pair responses (pre/post & pre/2mos) with Cohen’s d for effect size.

As of 10/13/20, 895 learners took part in the education. Nine pre/post questions showed an average of 13% lift, with a range of 11-15% per session. Follow-up surveys were received for the first session, to date. Interim results show 83% of respondents reporting a positive impact of education on clinical practice, and 70% reporting a positive impact on patient satisfaction and experience (n=40). Write-in examples describe: practice reinforcement, implementation of drug interactions reviews/polypharmacy awareness, earlier referrals to MS specialists, greater awareness of comorbidities and their interactions with early MS symptoms, the use of a team-approach in management, and improved patient adherence.

Quantitative testing and surveying supported the positive impact of live-online CME focused on improving clinician knowledge of MS, personalized management options, and general care delivery.
