Long-term Outcome in Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Neuromuscular and Clinical Neurophysiology (EMG)
P8 - Poster Session 8 (11:45 AM-12:45 PM)
11-007

To conduct a systematic review and meta-analyses of the long-term outcome in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP).

The long-term outcome in CIDP has been reported in longitudinal or cross-sectional studies. A considerable variation, however, in the severity of reported outcome appears. A systematic review can minimize this uncertainty.

A systematic review including four meta-analyses of long-term CIDP outcome was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Through a systematic search in PubMed and EMBASE 1,127 titles were identified. Sixty-seven full-text articles were screened and 20 studies with 1,177 patients were selected for the data analysis.
The pooled mortality rate is 3.5% (95% CI: 2.1% – 5.9%). The pooled proportion of non-ambulatory patients is 8.4% (95% CI: 5.8% – 11.9%) and overall, 47.1% (95% CI: 39.5% – 54.9%) of CIDP patients have a good outcome without disability. In addition, the pooled rate of long-term remission is 40.8% (95% CI: 30.6% – 51.8%).

The long-term prognosis of CIDP is favourable for the majority of patients, but for a minority of patients, loss of ambulation and death are concomitants.
