Learning Objectives Neuropsychiatric considerations occur frequently and in a multitude of ways in patients with seizures. Patients with epilepsy have higher rates of neuropsychiatric symptoms than the general population, including anxiety, depression, and cognitive symptoms; psychosocial difficulties are also important considerations in this population. Managing anti-seizure medications while taking into account mental health co-morbidities and psychopharmacology provide additional layers of complexity. Finally, one in five patients with functional seizures also has co-morbid epileptic seizures, creating both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This course is designed to help attendees bridge the Neurology-Psychiatry gap in assessing and managing patients with seizures by providing attendees with an integrative neuropsychiatric perspective that can be leveraged to guide longitudinal care. The course is structured in a case-based format to ensure that the educational information provided is readily translatable to clinical encounters. Upon completion participants will have learned: an overview of the components of the neuropsychiatric perspective that can be leveraged to provide patient-centered care to patients with seizures; how to use the biopsychosocial framework to guide treatment planning for patients with seizures; a practical approach to pharmacotherapy, including anti-seizure medications, and psychotherapy recommendations in patients with epilepsy experiencing co-morbid psychiatric symptoms; and evidence-based approach to differentiating epileptic vs. functional seizures, and available management strategies for functional seizures.
