Following this session attendees will articulate key components and indications for evaluations of decision making capacity and competency that neurologists face with patients across the spectrum of cognitive impairment; identify and weigh the legal, ethical, and clinical trade-offs and ramifications of competency determinations; describe how the decision-making process can be supported or challenged via the different disciplinary lenses; name necessary components for a model of supported decision making in patients with different neurologic and cognitive disorders across the life span; expand our understanding of tools/approaches available to the general neurologist to help better manage these complexities and thus ensuring patient-centered care.
