2026 Annual Meeting | Section Showcase: Novel and Emerging Technologies to Improve the Functional Impairments Faced by our Adult and Pediatric Patients

Overview: How can technology aid patients with impairments in cognitive, motor, and/or sensory function?  Can new technologies empower patients, increasing autonomy and inclusion in community activities, across the lifespan?
The CDC reports that 1 in 4 adults in the United States have at least one disability in hearing, vision, cognition, mobility, self-care, or independent living.  This Showcase Session will highlight current technologies and patient-centered approaches to help children and adults with neurological conditions with daily functioning.   
The session will include:

Clinical cases illustrating technologies utilized in neuro rehab
Highlight challenges of adapting technologies as individual’s grow and their needs change across the lifespan
Gaps in current care and emerging technologies to address these gaps

Learning Objectives:

Identify current technology available to address challenges with communication, mobility, and/or sensory function.
Understand needs for adapting technology supports across the lifespan.
Identify gaps in care from technology, policy, and funding perspectives.

Target Audience: Adult and pediatric neurologists, neuro rehabilitation, stroke and TBI/SCI specialists, trainees, allied health professionals, and anyone seeking technological solutions to improve functioning.  This includes AAN members who may experience difficulties in their or their families’ daily functioning.
 
This Section Showcase is a collaboration between the Neural Repair & Rehabilitation and the Adults with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Sections.
