Learning Objectives As a result of this session, participants should be able to identify the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentations, and evidence-based management principles of neurologic conditions affecting pregnant patients, including headache, epilepsy, acute ischemic stroke, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
Participants should be able to describe the physiologic changes of pregnancy and the postpartum period that influence neurologic disease presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and maternal-fetal outcomes. Particiapants should learn how to apply current evidence-based guidelines to evaluate, diagnose, and manage neurologic conditions in women across outpatient and emergency settings, including acute stroke, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, preeclampsia/eclampsia, headache, and epilepsy. Participants should also be able to analyze clinical presentations to differentiate neurologic emergencies from pregnancy-related mimics, interpret diagnostic findings, and determine appropriate escalation of care. As a result of this seminar, participants should understand the importance of developing patient-centered diagnostic and management plans that integrate multidisciplinary collaboration, medication safety during pregnancy and lactation, and individualized risk-benefit discussions. They should also be able to evaluate management strategies using current clinical evidence and guidelines to justify diagnostic and therapeutic decisions that optimize maternal and fetal outcomes while balancing safety and efficacy.
