Michael J. Fox Calls on Parkinson鈥檚 Patients, Community to Join 鈥淔ox Trial Finder鈥 in New Issue of Neurology Now®
New Tool Aims to Bring Better Treatments Faster
ST. PAUL, Minn. -
In his continued quest to outfox Parkinson鈥檚 disease, actor Michael J. Fox is calling on people with Parkinson鈥檚 and those without the disease to join Fox Trial Finder, a new web tool that connects volunteers with clinical trials that desperately need participants for the testing of new drugs and other treatments. Fox and Fox Trial Finder are featured in the latest issue of the award-winning magazine for patients and caregivers. Fox Trial Finder, created by The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson鈥檚 Research and launched in July, helps people with and without Parkinson鈥檚 disease find clinical trials close to where they live that may be a good match for their medical history. It empowers people by allowing them to take a proactive step in the fight against Parkinson鈥檚 disease. People who do not have Parkinson鈥檚 are encouraged to join Fox Trial Finder, as clinical trials often need people without the disease to be studied. 鈥淲hen I got my diagnosis, the first thing the doctor did was give me a prescription. If that doctor could have also given me a pamphlet describing something I could do to help myself and others over the long-term, that would have meant everything,鈥 Fox tells Neurology Now. 鈥淪o, that鈥檚 our vision. That鈥檚 what we are working toward every day. We want patients and the Parkinson鈥檚 community to receive the message: There is something you can do.鈥 Fox Trial Finder is part of a larger goal to bring better treatments to patients as quickly as possible. According to Fox鈥檚 Foundation, less than one in 10 people with Parkinson鈥檚 ever participate in a clinical trial and around 85 percent of clinical trials finish late because of trouble recruiting volunteers. Research shows that the majority of people with Parkinson鈥檚 are willing to participate, but they don鈥檛 know about the trials and websites for clinical trials have been hard to navigate. 鈥淥ne of the greatest privileges for me is to be in this position where I am constantly exposed to the creativity and passion and commitment of the Parkinson鈥檚 community,鈥 Fox tells Neurology Now. 鈥淎ll the different ways people are getting on the bus, doing whatever they can to help move the dial. When the cure is found 鈥 and it will be 鈥 it won鈥檛 be because of me or our foundation. It will be because of all of us working together.鈥 Learn more about Fox鈥檚 story in the latest issue of Neurology Now at and Fox Trial Finder at .
