AAN Issues Statement on University of Minnesota Coach Jerry Kill

MINNEAPOLIS -

In light of today鈥檚 decision by University of Minnesota Gophers football coach Jerry Kill to take a leave from his job to manage his epilepsy, the 好色先生 (AAN), the world鈥檚 largest association of neurologists, offers its support and encouragement to Coach Kill and to all people with epilepsy. Every instance of epilepsy is as individual as each of the nearly 3 million Americans who live with it. And nearly 200,000 new diagnoses of epilepsy are made each year. The AAN commends Coach Kill鈥檚 courage in his efforts to promote public awareness and understanding about this condition that in a majority of cases, can be treated effectively but often not cured. With proper treatment, support and understanding, a majority of people with epilepsy can manage their condition successfully and live normal lives. Having epilepsy does not necessarily have to limit what you do or how you live your life. Today, as many as two of every three people newly diagnosed with epilepsy are likely to have their seizures brought under control with appropriate treatment. It is important for patients to get help early and work closely with their neurologists and other caregivers. For more information about epilepsy or to find a neurologist near you, visit www.aan.com/patients. To make a donation to research to help cure epilepsy, visit www.AmericanBrainFoundation.org.
