Michael J. Fox Urges Patient Research Participation in Free DVD and Guidebook

Actor and Parkinson鈥檚 patient Michael J. Fox provides an inside perspective and urges fellow patients to participate in Parkinson鈥檚 research studies in Parkinson鈥檚 Disease: A Guide for Patients and Families, the latest free patient education DVD and guidebook produced by the 好色先生 (AAN) and its foundation, the American Brain Foundation. This respected resource answers important questions for people with newly diagnosed Parkinson鈥檚 disease and their caregivers. The newest issue of Neurology Now庐 also features Michael J. Fox and his decision to go back into acting in his new NBC sitcom, 鈥淭he Michael J. Fox Show,鈥 which follows the life of a news broadcaster living with Parkinson鈥檚. In an email interview, Fox discussed his return to television and the work of his namesake Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson鈥檚 Research, which has funded $375 million in research to date and has recently launched a study of smell loss and Parkinson鈥檚. Access the here. 鈥淭he quest for a cure depends on patients and their loved ones participating in clinical research,鈥 Fox told Neurology Now. 鈥淭his is still the thing people don鈥檛 know about, and it鈥檚 critically important, especially for newly diagnosed patients.鈥 As many as 96 percent of Parkinson's patients have lost some ability to smell by the time they are diagnosed, a process believed to begin years before the motor symptoms of Parkinson's appear. The Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) study aims to learn more about the link between sense of smell and Parkinson鈥檚. PPMI is seeking people over age 60 who do not have Parkinson鈥檚 disease to take the online smell survey at .
