Issue in focus
Advocacy doesn’t stop when Congress leaves Washington. During the August congressional recess, members of Congress return to their home states and districts to hear directly from constituents—and Neurology off the Hill gives AAN members a timely opportunity to make sure neurology is part of those conversations. As the summer counterpart to Neurology on the Hill, this program helps AAN member advocates build and strengthen relationships with lawmakers and their staff while they are home from DC.
This year’s Neurology off the Hill comes at a critical moment. With Congress facing a limited number of legislative days before the end of the session, and with lawmakers especially focused on issues affecting their constituents, AAN advocates can help advance priorities that directly affect neurologists, practices, and patients. These in-district meetings are an opportunity to share real-world stories, explain how federal policy affects access to neurological care, and reinforce the AAN as a trusted resource on issues impacting brain health.
AAN leaders select priority issues for Neurology off the Hill based on their relevance to members, the needs of patients, and the current legislative environment. By meeting locally with senators, representatives, and their staff, AAN advocates can elevate bipartisan solutions and demonstrate how policies debated in Washington affect their communities.

AAN responds to proposed changes to federal research funding
The AAN has submitted a comment letter in response to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) regarding proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded, administered, and overseen across all federal agencies. The AAN is deeply concerned that this proposal would undermine the integrity of the scientific review process and create new barriers to critical neuroscience research funding. Our comments express our opposition to changes that would impose substantial new restrictions on researchers, result in an increasingly politicized grants process, and hinder collaboration that is crucial to scientific advancement.
We’ve also created a new Action Alert to show the neurology community’s pressing concerns. to help us urge OMB to abandon this policy!
Prior authorization reform bill gets House markup
Following its qualification for the House Consensus Calendar, the Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act was marked up by the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee. The bill was reported favorably out of the subcommittee. It must now be reported out by the full Energy and Commerce Committee and considered by the House Ways and Means Committee before advancing to the House floor.
