Quality Informatics Subcommittee

The Quality Informatics Subcommittee aims to strengthen neurological practice and improve quality neurological care using informatics tools. The subcommittee supports the Quality Committee in achieving its accountable and responsible objectives; acts as consultants to provide thought leadership in the Academy on leveraging clinical informatics concepts like implementation, integration, interoperability, and governance of health IT and related technologies such as artificial intelligence to deliver safe, timely, efficient, effective, equitable, and patient-centered neurological care; and promotes alignment with federal and regulatory requirements for health IT and emerging technologies to ensure compliance and seamless integration of AAN quality resources by staying current with evolving standards and policies.

Job description

Committee objectives

  • Develop resources to educate members on health IT and related technologies, including, but not limited to, artificial intelligence and medical devices, ensuring optimal integration and application in care delivery and improved clinical outcomes.
  • Advance the interoperability of neurological data by standardizing key data elements and adopting FHIR-based standards where appropriate to support the development of digital products and drive quality.
  • Increase awareness and promote informatics education for neurologists and trainees to improve the quality of care in neurology practice, highlighting its value as a medical specialty.
  • Provide informatics subject matter expertise in federal and regulatory health IT/ technology-related rules and comment letters led and drafted by AAN Advocacy.
  • Collaborate with appropriate external organizations and, AAN committees, subcommittees, and workgroups.

Member responsibilities

  • Contribute to the successful design, implementation, and sustainability of informatics resources for neurology.
  • Attend the annual in-person meeting.
  • Attend quarterly subcommittee calls.
  • Participate in subcommittee listserv discussions and check and respond to emails in a timely manner.
  • Vote on subcommittee motions during meetings and via email communications.
  • Serve as liaison to other committees, subcommittees, or external organizations.
  • Copy AAN staff on all subcommittee-related correspondence.

Estimated time commitment

Five to ten hours per month, annual face-to-face meeting(s), and quarterly calls.  

Subcommittee composition

  • 17 at-large members:
    • Chair
    • Vice Chair
    • 15 voting members
  • Subcommittee members' experience should include Electronic Health Record (EHR) experience, including EHR implementation, quality measure reporting, data analytics, standardization, workflow design, template build, coding, clinical decision support tools, and digital health technology.
