Awareness of Stroke Risk Factors among Inpatient in Teaching Hospitals of Shahid Beheshti Medical University, Tehran, Iran 2011
Cerebrovascular Disease and Interventional Neurology

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the second most common cause of death worldwide, especially in developing countries where cardiovascular risk factors are increasing rapidly due to adoption of western lifestyle.
DESIGN/METHODS: This was a cross sectional study of patients admitted to three referral teaching hospitals with the diagnosis of stroke and study period extended between March and August 2011.We administered a stroke risk factor knowledge survey to 318 patients hospitalized.A standardized, structured interview with open-ended questions was performed by trained medical interns and the participants were asked to name risk factors by free recall.Patient's who were in coma or were aphasic were excluded.
RESULTS: 318 patients were interviewed,48.7%male,and 51.2%female,with the mean卤(SD)age of 67.6卤14years.Of these 318 patient's,44.8%were unable to name a single risk factor, while 14.5%of the respondents could spontaneously nominate 3or more stroke risk factors. The commonest risk factors identified were stress(53%),Anxiety(40%)and Hypertension(33.6%).Knowledge was not significantly different regarding sex(men=30% and women=31.1%)whereas age was significantly different;Patients aged<61years were more likely to know risk factors than those aged?61years(P=0.006).Concerning educational level, there was significant difference between patients with no literacy or primary education(31.5%)and patients with secondary education or more(41.8%)p=0.048.
CONCLUSIONS: The overall awareness was shown to be inadequate.Near half of patients did not know a single risk factor, while the most common risk factors quoted were stress and anxiety, which are the least documented risk factors. If high-risk patients are unaware that preventive practices can reduce their likelihood of a stroke, there would be little, hope for them to change their behaviors.
