More Educated Clinic Patients Are More Likely To Report Memory Loss in Dementia
Aging and Dementia
P07 - (-)
129
BACKGROUND: This study retrospectively analyses the relationship between educational status and perception of memory loss of the patients at the memory clinic at TheAlzcenter.org at Quincy Medical Center.
DESIGN/METHODS: We reviewed charts of 147 de-identified patients attending TheAlzcenter.org memory clinic. 79 of the patients were diagnosed with Alzheimer disease, 20 with mild cognitive impairment, and 48 with other dementia diagnoses. Self perceived decline (SPD) was measured on a scale of 0 to 5 (0 being normal perception of memory compared to at age 50) for all patients. Number of years of education for each individual was obtained from the patient's chart. We conducted univariate analysis to evaluate the correlation between SPD and educational status and SPD and diagnosis. We then conducted a multivariate analysis between SPD and education after adjusting for age, race, gender and diagnosis.
RESULTS: Individuals with higher educational attainment had better self-perception of memory decline.
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that in a memory clinic population, the perception of memory loss by an individual is correlated with the level of education attained, independent of factors age, race, gender and diagnosis.
