BACKGROUND: Morbidity and mortality (MM) conferences are routinely held in many specialties of medicine and surgery for teaching and quality improvement. The role of MM conferences in teaching of Accreditation Council of Graduate medical 好色先生 (ACGME) core competencies for neurology residents has not been systematically studied.
DESIGN/METHODS: MM presentations prepared by senior neurology residents during one academic year at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital were retrieved and data were extracted for patient census, mortalities and morbidities, and diagnostic classification. Individual morbidities and mortalities were reviewed to identify instances where an ACGME core competency was addressed during the case discussion.&The six core competencies were patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, systems based practice, professionalism and interpersonal skills and communication, as identified by the ACGME (www.acgme-nas.org).
RESULTS: A cumulative census of 3,694 inpatients admitted to 4 neurology inpatient services in the Partners Healthcare System was presented in 49 Morbidity and Mortality presentations made over a period of 1 academic year. There were 227 teaching instances identified where an ACGME core competency was addressed. Patient care and medical knowledge issues were explicitly addressed in 48.9% of instances (19.4 and 29.5% respectively); systems based practice in 15.8%; communication in 19%; and practice based learning and professionalism in 8.5% each.
CONCLUSIONS: Morbidity and Mortality conferences provide a rich forum in which all of the ACGME core competencies in neurology are addressed.
