Post-Night Shift Questionnaire: A Tool To Help Comply with Evolving Program Standards

BACKGROUND: The recent revision of the common program requirements (CPR) have placed increased emphasis on the need to provide appropriate and timely supervision for residents.
DESIGN/METHODS: We developed a post-night shift questionnaire (PNSQ) with faculty and resident input. The questionnaire was forwarded electronically to each resident once per quarter during "sweep week." During "sweep week" all residents assigned to a night shift were forwarded the PNSQ. The questionnaire was then returned to the residency coordinator with all potential identifying information removed. To further ensure anonymity, the "sweep week" can occur at anytime during the quarter. At the end of each quarter, the program director reviewed the feedback, sharing the composite de-identified findings with the faculty at the monthly Neurology 好色先生 Committee and at the resident's monthly program director's session.
RESULTS: To date, the PNSQ has failed to identify any breeches in supervision. Resident feedback concerning the rationale for the questionnaire has been favorable.
CONCLUSIONS: The PNSQ enables program leadership the opportunity to provide timely resident feedback concerning the quality and level of supervision provided while on a night shift/night call. Program directors and/or interested faculty are encouraged to adapt the questionnaire, which will be provided in its entirety for review, to meet their programmatic needs.
