The Relationship between Tau Protein and C-Reactive Protein during Ischemic Stroke

BACKGROUND: Tau protein, associated typically with neurodegenerative disorders, is elevated in blood of ischemic stroke (IS). However the mechanism of the crossing of Tau protein by blood brain barrier (BBB) to the systemic circulation is unclear. Researches made on animals suggest an active role of C -reactive protein (CRP) during IS and its involvement in the BBB destruction.
DESIGN/METHODS: Clinical status of 54 patients with CT confirmed IS was evaluated on day 1,3,5, 10 and 3 months after onset of stroke. Commercially available ELISA kits were applied to evaluate Tau protein and CRP serum levels on day 1,3,5 and 10 of IS and in the age and sex-matched control group(40).
RESULTS: Tau protein was found in 47.8% of IS patients and was not found in any patients in the control group.The concentration of Tau protein in serum was gradually increased to the maximum level on day 10 after stroke onset.The medium CRP level increased gradually till the 5th day and then decreased to the day 10. The mean CRP level correlates positively with mean Tau protein level (rs=0.041 p<0.01). In the group of patients with CRP level below median value (0.51-24.68 mg/dL) the Tau protein level was lower than in the group with a high CRP level above median value (24.69-209 mg/dL).
CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest the relationship between CRP and Tau serum levels. Morover level of Tau protein in serum is determined by CRP concentration. It may be connected with the possible detrimental effect of CRP on the permeability of BBB.
