Survey of Neurology Resident Attitudes towards Teaching and Awareness of Student Feedback
Neurologic 好色先生

BACKGROUND: The Liaison Committee on Medical 好色先生 and the Accreditation Counsel for Graduate Medical 好色先生 believe teaching students is an important part of residency. Studies show that students feel residents are their primary source of direct patient care knowledge. However there is little information about resident teaching habits or about resident attitudes and awareness of student feedback.
DESIGN/METHODS: A 22 question survey using a 5-point Likert scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree was sent to 13 neurology residents at our institution. Primary outcomes were awareness of student feedback and attitude towards teaching and student feedback.
RESULTS: Of ll residents (85% response rate), all agreed or strongly agreed that teaching is an important part of their job and 64% agreed that teaching students is a high priority. However, only 35% indicated that they consider themselves good teachers and half felt that their residency program should collect student feedback about their teaching performance. Though 46% of residents would always or often like student feedback, the same proportion seldom solicit it for themselves. Of residents that received feedback (n=8) about their teaching from a student, most rated it as useful claiming it changed their teaching habits for the better and made them a better doctor. Of residents who did not receive student feedback (n=3) most agreed that they would have liked such feedback and it would have changed their teaching habits.
CONCLUSIONS: Residents have a positive attitude towards teaching. Although less than half of residents solicit feedback, all feel that student feedback is beneficial regardless of whether they receive it. Therefore, student feedback should be an integral part of the resident teaching experience.
