Title Kinect-Based Analysis of Posture, Gait and Coordination in Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Objective

Background BACKGROUND: Motor impairment, reduction of walking distance and ability, coordination problems, gait and posture disturbances are common symptoms in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. They contribute significantly to overall disability, reduced mobility and quality of life and may have direct impact on employment status. So far, the established assessment procedures may be affected by a subjective investigator's bias when assessing the neurological status / EDSS, or miss particular aspects of motor function, such as in the Multiple Sclerosis Functional Composite (MSFC). Standardized procedures to evaluate posture, gait and trunk and extremity coordination objectively are not established yet in MS patients.

Design/Methods DESIGN/METHODS: Cross-sectional study including 20 MS patients and 20 age and gender-matched HC subjects. Patients and controls performed a custom 15-minute video-based movement analysis based on combined video and depth data provided by the Microsoft Kinect®. For clinical characterisation of MS patients, history of MS, neurological status including EDSS step and MSFC were assessed.

Results RESULTS: Motor system assessment by using Microsoft Kinect® proved to be well tolerated by study subjects. Established neurological tests, such as Romberg's test, tandem walking and Unterberger test were recorded and analysed. The data collection is on-going; final data on test results and retest reliability will be included in the final presentation.

Conclusions CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggests combined video- and depth-based assessments to be a fast, non-invasive, feasible and well-tolerated method to detect even subtle clinical alterations in gait, posture, and trunk and extremity coordination. As an inexpensive method it has the potential to complement neurological examination and established clinical assessments such as the MSFC.
