Assessment of Vitamin D Deficiency in Patients with Neurological Disorders
Neural Repair/Rehabilitation
P03 - (-)
271
BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency has been recently correlated with numerous disorders of the Nervous System.
DESIGN/METHODS: All patients hospitalized between 1 April 2010 and 31 August 2012 underwent blood sample to test vitamin D (25 OH-D) level. The range of the laboratory were: normality between 31 and 100 ng/mL, moderate deficient state between 20 and 30 ng/mL, while levels below 20 ng/mL indicate a deficient state. Logistic regression analysis was performed.
RESULTS: 458 patients underwent blood test (240 M and 218 W). Mean age was 58.4 卤 16.5 without differences between sexes (p=0.33). Vitamin D deficiency was detected in 266 patients (58.1%), (138 M and 128 W), mean level was 11.6 卤 4.5 ng/mL, without differences between sexes (p=0.51). Vitamin D deficiency was detected more frequently in patients suffering for ataxic syndromes (72.7%), ALS (66.7%), spine lesions (63.3%), polyneuropathies (63.0%), and stroke (62.6%). In patients over 65 years of age, Vitamin D deficiency was detected more frequently in patients suffering for stroke (77.0%), polyneuropathies (72.7%), traumatic brain injuries (66.6%), spine lesions (64.3%), and Parkinson's disease (64.0%). No significant correlations were identified at the logistic regression analysis (p>0.05 for all categories).
CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study may have been biased by the type of the study population (hospital-based) and the small size of the sample. However, the frequent association between Vitamin D deficiency and neurologic disorders indicates that this vitamin may have a fundamental role in physiologic and pathological processes of the Nervous System, particularly in patients over 65 years of age. Vitamin D deficiency should be investigated routinely in clinical practice as the detection of this parameter may have important therapeutic implications.
