Psychosocial Outcomes and Improvement in Quality of Life after Epilepsy Surgery in Patients with Mesial Temporal Sclerosis
Epilepsy
P03 - (-)
125
BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological diseases. Approximately 30% of these patients have drug-resistant epilepsy. Therefore, surgery is a treatment option that should not be delayed.
DESIGN/METHODS: After collecting demographic and clinical data, patients received several questionnaires to evaluate for depression (Beck), anxiety (Beck), self-esteem (Rosenberg) and QOLIE-10 (Quality Of Life in Epilepsy 10 items, validated Spanish version). Questionnaires were administered to 16 patients diagnosed of MTS who underwent surgical treatment between 2005 and 2011, and to 16 patients with MTS but not surgical candidates that served as a control group. We performed a statistical analysis (student T for depression and QOLIE-10 and Mann Whitney U for anxiety and self-esteem) comparing the results of both groups.
RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 43.81 (卤 10.87) in the surgically treated group and 39.31 (卤 7.51) in patients in the control group. The groups were similar in age and sex. The group of surgery patients presented lower scores on questionnaires for depression and anxiety, higher scores in self-esteem and an higher overall score on QOLIE-10, resulting in a better overall quality of life from the first year to the fifth year after surgery. These findings are statistically significant (p <0.001) for the four variables studied.
CONCLUSIONS: Epilepsy surgery leads to an improvement in quality of life of patients, not only by decreasing the number of seizures, but also improving psychological and social aspects. Therefore, surgical option should not be delayed in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.
