BACKGROUND: Accurate self-assessment is integral to continued clinical development. It would be useful to know how well student estimates of their performance match with other measures like faculty assessment, shelf examination, and CEX.
DESIGN/METHODS: At the end of their core neurology rotation students are asked to pick descriptors that best describe their overall floor performance using standard rubricks such as history taking, knowledge base, professionalism, etc. Faculty and resident evaluators also pick the statement for each rubrick that they feel best describes the student. Evaluator and student responses will be compared and these responses also cross referenced with other available data including shelf score and CEX score.
RESULTS: Spearman correlation between faculty and student assessment was relatively weak (current n=12, r=0.40, p<0.05). Correlation of overall student self-assessment and shelf percentile was also weak (rs=0.35, NS), as was correlation between knowledge base self score and shelf percentile (rs=0.12, NS). Overall faculty assessments and knowledge base assessments also correlated poorly (rs=0.09, r=-.01, both NS.) Correlation between overall student self-assessment and CEX score was also weak (rs=-0.13, NS), as was faculty assessment (rs=0.09, NS). Additional data is being collected prospectively and will be included.
CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary results indicate that student self-assessments correlate poorly with faculty assessments and other measures including the shelf percentile score and CEX score. Faculty assessments also correlate poorly with these measures.
