Trends in Outcome and Cost of Hospitalization of Adult Myasthenia Gravis Patients Treated with Plasmapheresis from 1992 to 2009. NIS Database Analysis
Clinical Neurophysiology

Plasmapheresis has been used extensively to treat adult MG.
We determined the rates of occurrence, in-hospital outcomes, and mean hospital charges for adult patients hospitalized with MG treated with plasmapheresis between 1992 and 2009 using Nationwide Inpatient Survey (NIS).
The number of patients treated with plasmapheresis varied from 41 in 2004, and 2008 to 121 in 1998. The average patients age varies from a minimum of 47.57 卤 17.31 in 1996 to a maximum of 57.73卤 15.76 in 2006, p > 0.05, which is not significant at alpha=0.05. Female predominance varied from 33 % in 1992, and 1993 to 54% in 1998. The average length of hospitalization (in days) per year was significantly different during the study time period p < 0.05 (maximum 15.66 卤 16.4 on 1993 and minimum on 10.37 卤 4.54 in 2009). In hospital death per year was not significantly different during the study time period. There was a significant increase in mean hospital charges per year and per patient during the study time period p < 0.0001. (maximum $104143 卤 89931.07 on 2009, minimum $31,491 卤 24,122.83 on 1994).
There is a significant increase of mean hospitalization charges of adult patients with MG treated with plasmapheresis from 1992 to 2009 that did not parallel the variation in mean duration of hospitalization.
