Effects of Essential Phospholipids on Movement and Cognitive Function in Patients with Stroke

BACKGROUND: Essential phospholipids (substance EPL) or Polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC) are structural components of the cellular membranes in all organs as well as cells of brain's gray matter. EPL is used worldwide as an antioxidant medication for treatment the various liver diseases, disturbance of the cerebral and peripheral circulation and as a medication for treatment psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, eczema, etc.
DESIGN/METHODS: EPL treatment has been provided by Essentiale N - solution for intravenous injection 5 ml. contains 250 mg of EPL. This study was conducted in 24 patients with acute stroke. There were observed two groups with equal number of 12 patients with MRI definite acute stroke. All patients received vasoactive, neurometabolical, regenerative and symptomatically treatment. In all cases was started early rehabilitation. The first group of patients received pattern stroke treatment therapy and for the second group of patients in the pattern therapy was included EPL. The primary efficacy measures were evaluated by improvement NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
RESULTS: The summary scale were compared after a week of treatment and observation The percentage in patients received the pattern therapy was 51,7 % and for patients received pattern therapy including EPL was 63,5%. There has not been determined any side effects.
CONCLUSIONS: EPL is good tolerated and effective for treatment in acute stroke patients.
