011
BACKGROUND: Mobile health is defined as the practice of medicine using mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Such devices are widely used by physicians and patients alike and are shaping the way that we practice neurology. This technology allows physicians and health care systems to improve communication with patients, augments provider care with computer-assisted decision making, facilitiates physician to physician consultation with readily obtainable video recording, and allows for immediate access to medical records. These novel tools provide an opportunity to restructure of the patient-physician interaction.
DESIGN/METHODS: Neurology residents and faculty were surveyed and independently interviewed regarding their use of mobile health devices and applications and adaptation into their practice. Particular attention was placed on technology that changed the way that the physician had previously assessed or treated patients.
RESULTS: The majority of physicians surveyed used mobile technology in the care of their patients. However, this technology was typically only utilized to enhance the previously established care model, as in regards to increased access to information or treatment protocols. Of note, a few physicians did describe using this technology to change the way that they cared for patients.
CONCLUSIONS: The use of mobile health technology in neurology practice creates novel opportunities to interact with, assess, and treat our patients.
