Title Evaluation of Cerebral Hemodynamics of Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Objective

Background BACKGROUND: Current study aimed to evaluate cerebral hemodinamics of OSAS patients in terms of Breath-Holding-Index(BHI) and Mean blood flow velocity (MBFV) by using Transcranial-Doppler-Ultrasound (TCD).

Design/Methods DESIGN/METHODS: The study group was consisted of 30 untreated male patients with OSAS and control group was composed of 26 age and sex matched healthy subjects. MBFV and BHI were measured in middle cerebral artery (MCA) bilaterally in patient and control groups. We compared the MBFV and BHI values between the groups.

Results RESULTS: Middle cerebral artery MBFV (OSAS MBFV=52.50±11.92 and Control MBFV=60.94±11.61) (p<0.001) and BHI (p=0.003) (OSAS BHI=1.45±0.45 and Control BHI=1.60±0.65) were significantly decreased in patient group when compared to control group.

Conclusions CONCLUSIONS: Recent studies showed that reduction in BHI is associated with increased stroke risk. Our data indicated decreased BHI in OSAS patients. We suggest that increased risk of stroke may be related to decreased BHI index in patients with OSAS. Decreased MBFV may be associated with reduced blood supply of the brain tissue and this may contribute to the increased risk of stroke in patients with OSAS.
