Abstract Details

Validation of a New Portable (Goggles) Technique for Determination of the Visual Temporal Discrimination Threshold
Movement Disorders
P07 - (-)
198
BACKGROUND: The visual temporal discrimination threshold (TDT) test determines the temporal threshold at which two LED lights, positioned on a table in front of the subject and flashing at variable intervals, appear to be asynchronous in onset. We have demonstrated that the TDT is a sensitive endophenotype in adult onset primary torsion dystonia (AOPTD) patients and unaffected first-degree relatives. The test has been limited to the laboratory setting due to the need for a darkened environment.
DESIGN/METHODS: The visual goggles TDT system is a head mounted device made of laser-sintered nylon plastic with high strength, low transparency rating, incorporating a mirror reflection system. LEDs are placed left and right of a central crosshair point, ensuring that the dimensions of 700mm and 7 degrees of the traditional method are preserved. The mirrors reflect the LEDs that are positioned at the rear of the device, providing a focal length of 350mm. We compared TDTs determined by both goggles and traditional techniques in healthy control participants.
RESULTS: In 15 healthy control participants examined by both the traditional and portable methods to date there were no significant differences in mean visual TDT scores.
CONCLUSIONS: This novel portable device for TDT acquisition will facilitate acquisition of TDT data in a larger cohort of AOPTD patients and relatives in their homes in order to identify potential gene carriers among families of affected patients for genetic studies.
