Population Based Study of Co-Morbidity of Neurological Autoimmune Diseases in Buenos Aires, Argentina
MS and Related Diseases
P02 - (-)

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune diseases are complex disorders caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. The current literature indicates an overall coexistence of autoimmune diseases in the range of 20%-30%. To our knowledge, this is the first population-based study that investigates the association of autoimmune disorders with MS, NMO, MG and CIDP patients in Argentinean population.
DESIGN/METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of patients suffering MS, NMO, MG and CIDP seen at the Neuroinmmunology Clinic of the Ramos Mejia Hospital in Argentina during the period from 2006 to 2011.The data that we analysed was the association of other autoimmune disease.
RESULTS: Two hundred and sixty-four were included. Out of 52 MS patients,12 (23 %) had another autoimmune disease (autoimmune thyroid disease, antiphopholipid syndrome, primary biliary cirrhosis, psoriasis , type 1 diabetes, raynaud syndrome, uveitis and cutaneo vasculitis). 25/91 MG patients, (32%) had association with other autoimmnune disease (22 had autoimmune thyroid disease and the others celiac disease, NMO and vitiligo). 11/34 NMO patients (32%) had autoimmune comorbity (systemic lupus erythematosus, myasthenia gravis, Sjogren syndrome, antiphopholipid syndrome and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura).20/87 CIDP patients (23%) had another autoimmune disease (rheumatic diseases, optic neuritis, psoriasis, autoimmune thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes).
CONCLUSIONS: In the present study, 27.5 % of all patients had another autoimmune disease. Patients with MG and NMO showed a greater association with diseases whose pathogenesis is primarily humoral while the majority MS and CIDP patients were associated with diseases whose pathogenesis is primarily cellular. This study also emphasizes the need to actively look for other autoimmune diseases in the studied population.
