Neurology and Global Health: Initiatives Led by Residents and Staff from the Partners Neurology Program
Global Health
IN6 - (-)
010
Developing countries face a large and growing burden of neurologic disease and are confronted by scarcity of neurologists and resources (1,2).
Starting in the academic year 2012-2013, a group of residents and faculty at Partners Neurology has formed a 'Neurology/Global Health' special interest group with the goal to support distant healthcare providers in caring for their patients with neurologic diseases. We identified needs that our members observed during international health rotations and matched these with resources available within our institutions.
Our group has developed several projects to enhance neurological care in developing countries: 1) founding a remote access Tele-Neurology Clinic staffed by residents and faculty at our institutions serving areas that need neurologic healthcare providers, 2) establishing partnerships with Neurology education programs in developing countries, 3) creating education modules for primary care providers in low-resource environments in collaboration with global health organizations that serve these regions, 4) forming collaborations with nursing and allied health professionals at our institutions to create a multidisciplinary global neurology task force, 5) forming collaborations with other departments at our institutions (such as Neurosurgery, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Radiology and Psychiatry) in common disease outreach programs.
Global health in neurology is a burgeoning field with significant potential to enhance resident and provider education and patient care. Our initiatives promise to address the great need for establishment of neurological care and education in developing countries. We will track the impact of these interventions and aim to expand our network of collaborators over the next years.
