To investigate the association of CIDP with other autoimmune disorders

CIDP have been associated with other autoimmune disorders in a few case reports.

Patients were retrieved from the Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) database for the 1998 - 2014 time period using the Principal Diagnosis Code for CIDP.

We compared the incidence of 4 autoimmune disorders (Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), Myasthenia Gravis (MG), Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)) in CIDP with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disorder, and migraine, a disorder without autoimmune component.

We identified 2850 ,  29808 and 275631 patients with CIDP, MS and migraine respectively.  The incidence of  the above autoimmune disorders was significantly higher in CIDP group compared to MS and migraine groups respectively (13.1% vs 0.7% vs 0.45% p<0.0001).  GBS  was reported in 11.2% of CIDP, 0.11% of MS and 0.03% of migraine patients p<0.0001; MG  was reported in 0.88% of CIDP, 0.21% of MS and 0.04% of migraine p<0.0001;  ADEM was reported in 0.07% of CIDP 0.02% of MS and 0.0007% of migraine p=0.10;  SLE was reported in 0.74% of CIDP, 0.35% of MS and 0.37% of migraine p<0.0015.
CIDP patients are more likely to also develop other autoimmune disorders compared to patients with MS and Migraine. Work in progress to determine the temporal association between autoimmune disorder and CIDP, the role of age, gender and comorbid conditions in the occurrence of autoimmune dysfunction in CIDP.
