Neurology International Residents Videoconference and Exchange (NIRVE)
Global Health and Neuroepidemiology
P2 - Poster Session 2 (5:30 PM-6:30 PM)
7-043
To provide peer-led Neurology education across international sites, provide
exposure to Global Health in Neurology and encourage international collaboration and knowledge transfer among Neurology residents.
Most neurology training programs in North America lack a Global Health
component to their curriculum. Whereas on-the-ground international clinical and research exchanges are feasible for some residents, the majority will lack exposure to the practice of Neurology abroad. The Neurology International Residents Videoconference and Exchange (NIRVE) is a resident initiative at the University of Toronto and unites Neurology residents around the world through monthly video-conferenced case discussions with a strong focus on global health education.
NIRVE currently consists of 6 international sites: University of Toronto and University of Ottawa in Canada; Universidade Federal de São Paulo in Brazil; Faculty of Medicine CAS-UDD in Santiago, Chile; First Saint-Petersburg Pavlov State Medical University in St. Petersburg, Russia; and Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa, Russia. Each session is attended by an average of 30 residents. The main case presentation is about 25 minutes long and has included topics such as Tuberculous Meningitis and Neurosarcoidosis. It is followed by a 15 minute “Image Challenge” section focused on a radiological case. Global health topics are incorporated and used to promote dialogue on the current state and various advances and challenges in neurology, both locally and internationally.
A survey of the resident participants was conducted to evaluate the
effectiveness of the program, and more than 80% participants found the rounds relevant and useful for their learning. Residents have also been able to arrange international exchanges at the participating NIRVE sites.
NIRVE is allowing international Neurology residents to connect with
peers. Its impact has been taken from the virtual world to on-the-ground clinical practice both through the clinical exchanges done among the sites and is likely to influence future neurologists’ practice.
