Empowering residents to enhance Medical Students' 好色先生 during their Neurology Clerkship

To explore the influence of neurology residents’ teaching on medical students’ rotating through the neurology clerkship, and how it improves their confidence in the management of neurological conditions.

Early recognition of common neurological conditions is crucial to allow for timely management or appropriate referrals. Unfortunately, many non-neurologist physicians feel uncomfortable dealing with these conditions. This is, to some extent, due to lack of proper training and understanding of the field. Medical students rotating through neurology are closely involved with residents during their clerkship. Students’ learning and confidence is likely affected by the residents’ teaching skills and methods.

We created pre and post clerkship anonymous surveys for 3rd year students that rotated our Neurology department, at UTHealth, McGovern Medical School. Surveys focused on student’s confidence in Neurology, and various features of residents’ teaching. We used descriptive statistics to show the correlation between different aspects of the students’ educational interaction with residents, and its effect in their post-rotation confidence in dealing with neurological conditions. We used the Spearman correlation analyses to determine the correlates of these results.
A total of 59 surveys were completed. Initially, only 22.54% of the students felt confident managing neurological conditions. This increased to 93.22% after the rotation. Various aspects of the residents’ educational influence were assessed, including effectiveness, professionalism, bedside manners, and time invested in teaching. 76.27% indicated that residents are very efficient teachers, and 94.91% believed residents created a positive learning experience for them. Student’s confidence correlated significantly with teaching efficiency (r=0.356, p< .006) and residents’ overall effect during the clerkship experience (r=0.351; p=0.07).
Preliminary results show that effective resident teaching improves students’ learning during clerkship. Our group is currently focused on improving the student’s learning resources, as well as providing residents with teaching workshops in order to improve educational skills. Future goals include obtaining more objective measures, such as test scores and clerkship evaluations.
