Title Results From the Chronic Migraine Epidemiology and Outcomes (CaMEO) Study Demonstrate a High Level of Unmet Need for Migraine Treatment in People Who Discontinue Acute Prescription Migraine Medication

Objective To assess migraine-related burden and treatment decisions in lapsed acute prescription migraine medication (APMM) users among respondents meeting criteria for migraine from the Chronic Migraine Epidemiology and Outcomes (CaMEO) Study.

Background Migraine is a common yet underdiagnosed and undertreated neurological disease often causing significant disability. Low satisfaction with and adherence to acute prescription medications contribute to poorly optimized treatment in those with migraine.

Design/Methods This analysis of the longitudinal, Web-based CaMEO Study data focused on respondents meeting modified International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2^nd Edition migraine criteria who discontinued APMM (ie, lapsed users) with respect to treatment decisions, headache characteristics, and headache-related disability. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to aggregate related discontinuation responses into factors.

Results

Of 13,624 respondents with migraine, 1719 were lapsed users of APMM, and 78.4% of these were female. Headache frequency of at least 15 days monthly, which is the threshold for a diagnosis of chronic migraine, was reported by 11.0% of lapsed users, and the monthly headache days reported by all lapsed users was 5.6 ± 6.6 (mean ± SD) days/month. More than two-thirds (67.5%) of lapsed users reported receiving a migraine diagnosis from a healthcare professional in the past and 87.5% had stopped seeing their headache healthcare professional. Only 1 in 5 lapsed users reported being able to work or function normally with a headache, and 41.8% had moderate to severe disability on the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS). Among the most commonly reported reasons for prescription medication lapses were concerns about prescription medication efficacy (28.2%) and tolerability (24.9%); more than half of respondents who reported either of these responses had moderate to severe disability.

Conclusions

A high level of unmet treatment need exists in people with migraine who discontinue acute prescription medication.
