Burnout among Japanese Female Neurologists: a Preliminary Investigation

To investigate the prevalence and current status of burnout among Japanese female neurologists.
Burnout is a serious problem among physicians. A survey on US neurologists found that 6 out of 10 neurologists experienced burnout. Recently, burnout was found to be more common in females than in males. 
A total of 1,265 female neurologists with neurological certificates from the Japanese Society of Neurology were surveyed using a burnout-focused questionnaire from March 16 to 31, 2018. The questionnaire comprised 13 questions covering personal and professional characteristics with three dimensions (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment), factors contributing burnout, outcomes, and association with female gender. The questionnaire additionally included a free text entry area.
The response rate was 49.2% (623 of 1,265 neurologists). Among all female neurologists, 46.1% experienced emotional exhaustion, 43.9% felt they had low personal accomplishment, and 7.3% perceived depersonalization. Overall, 63.7% (397 of 623) female neurologists experienced at least one burnout symptom. Among those who experienced burnout, 13% left their job, 10% changed careers, and 4% undertook retirement. With regard to age, 46% of respondents were in their 30s, 24% in their 40s, and 20% in their 20s. Factors related to burnout were identified as workplace stress (66%), overtime work (58%), and family problems (37%). Burnout was associated with female gender in 58% of the respondents. 
Burnout is common among female Japanese neurologists.  As the Japanese society of Neurology, we should continue our efforts to reduce burnout and enhance well-being in female neurologists.
