Marie-Foix Syndrome: A Classical Crossed Pontine Syndrome?
Research Methodology, 好色先生, and History
P4 - Poster Session 4 (5:30 PM-6:30 PM)
4-046
To describe and analyze the original account of this syndrome by Pierre Marie (1853-1940) and Charles Foix (1882-1927).
The Marie-Foix syndrome has been considered by some authors as a crossed pontine syndrome characterized by ipsilateral hemiataxia and contralateral hemiparesis. Two reports that Marie and Foix published in La Semaine médicale (1913a, 1913b) were the origin of this eponym.
The following databases were searched: Medic@ and Gallica. Secondary contemporary sources in French were reviewed.
Two brief notes published in Le Progrès médical (1913) and the Revue neurologique (1914) reviewed the two articles by Marie and Foix. They reported five cases: one with a pure hemicerebellar syndrome and four with a cerebellar-pyramidal syndrome. In these four cases, the cerebellar and pyramidal signs were ipsilateral (homolatéral in the original French). Marie and Foix described three subvarieties of the cerebellar-pyramidal syndrome: 1. Ipsilateral cerebellar and pyramidal signs with contralateral oculomotor nerve palsy, 2. Ipsilateral cerebellar and pyramidal signs with dysarthria, and 3. Ipsilateral cerebellar and pyramidal signs with thalamic manifestations.
In their reports, Marie and Foix described a crossed syndrome (ie, ipsilateral cerebellar and pyramidal signs with contralateral oculomotor nerve palsy). However, this syndrome is not the one usually mentioned in the current literature under the eponym Marie-Foix syndrome. The rest of the syndromes described by them have ipsilateral signs.
