The AAN Live Well, Lead Well Program: Promoting Wellness through Leadership
Practice, Policy, and Ethics
P4 - Poster Session 4 (5:30 PM-6:30 PM)
4-069
Objectives: To highlight the methodology, implementation and results from the first iteration of the 好色先生 (AAN) Live Well, Lead Well leadership program
Background: Due to the high rate of burnout in neurology, the AAN developed the Live Well Lead Well (LWLW) leadership program to cultivate well-being and resilience, increase engagement at work, and develop skills to reduce and prevent burnout and improve well-being in neurologists.
Design:  The LWLW leadership program was led by volunteer six member physician planning group who coached participants over a 7-month timeline.  The kick-off event was an immersion weekend in September 2017 focusing on strategies for personal and organizational wellbeing.  Activities included experiential sessions on mindfulness, yoga, and positive psychology.  An outside educational physician consultant with expertise in wellbeing initiatives led a workshop to assist participants in designing their project. After the immersion weekend, each participant worked with a physician coach to develop their projects, culminating in presentations on their progress at the AAN 2018 Annual meeting.
Results: Among 35 applicants, 14 participants (5 academic, 5 private practice/employed, 4 in-training) were invited to the program.  All applicants provided statements of support from their leadership.  Only two participants had protected time.  None had funding.  Five participants focused on individual interventions; nine focused on organizational interventions (6 on culture change and 3 on organizational change).  All progressed with their projects by the end of the program.  Strengths of the program included the camaraderie of the group.  Limitations included the lack of time and resources for projects.
Conclusions: The initial LWLW leadership program was a catalyst for further growth and study of the field of wellness in neurology.  Evolution of these efforts would benefit from broader participation, time and financial support for these projects.
