To identify the factors affecting quality of life in patients with cluster headache during the active periods.

Previous studies have shown that the quality of life of cluster headache patients is impaired. In this study, we studied to identify the factors affecting quality of life in patients with cluster headache during the active periods.

The patients with cluster headache were enrolled from September 2016 to February 2018 in 15 headache clinics in Korea Cluster Headache Registry. The questionnaire conducted questions about their quality of life using EQ-5D-3L (EQ-5D) instrument. The age-sex matched control groups consisted of patients with migraine were recruited.
A total of 140 cluster headache patients during an active period were included in this study. The cluster patients had lower level than migraineurs in all EQ-5D domains. Although CH patients had lower level than migraineurs on most scales, the difference was significant on usual activities and pain/discomfort domain. All EQ-5D scale scores significantly correlated with the severity and frequency of pain. Multiple regression analyses revealed that daily frequency of headache and duration of active periods could be predicted quality of life of cluster headache during the active periods.
Our findings suggest that improvement daily frequency of headache attacks and duration of active periods might be critical in quality of life of the cluster headache patients.
