P14 - Poster Session 14 (11:45 AM-12:45 PM)
7-001
To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of nationwide, online virtual didactics educating neuroimmunology fellows on high-yield topics that may not be encountered by trainees in all programs.
Neuroimmunology is a rapidly evolving subspecialty, requiring expertise in a growing number of disease entities and numerous immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory medications. At this time, fellowship training is not standardized, and discrepancies exist in fellowship programs across the United States. Moreover, not all fellowship training programs can provide hands-on exposure to some of the rarer neuroimmunologic conditions. Thus, greater standardization of the fellowship educational experience is needed.
A steering committee of six neuroimmunology fellowship program directors selected 18 topics felt to be high yield but representing niche areas of expertise. A live, interactive seminar series was organized. Recognized experts on each topic led a seminar using a teleconferencing platform over the 2020-2021 academic year. Recordings were subsequently made available on demand. The seminar series was advertised to US neuroimmunology fellowship programs via emails to trainees and program directors. Trainees were surveyed before and after the seminar series and comfort levels with each topic were recorded. Fellowship program directors were also surveyed.
An average of 41 trainees participated in each live seminar and an average of 17 trainees viewed each seminar on demand. Trainee comfort levels with each topic increased after the seminar series was completed. An average of 72% of trainees self-identified as at least “comfortable” with each topic after the series compared to 26% beforehand (P<0.0001). Fellowship program directors found each topic to be valuable for trainee education.
Utilizing a teleconferencing platform to deliver an educational seminar series is feasible and represents an effective way to increase trainee comfort levels in niche topics that may not be encountered by all trainees during their fellowship training.
