Longitudinally Integrated Clerkships and Interwoven Learning Experiences: Adapting Neuroscience 好色先生 to Evolving Medical School Curricula

To adapt and integrate clinical and basic neuroscience education into a new curriculum featuring longitudinally integrated clerkships (LIC) and advanced interwoven courses at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CUSOM).

Undergraduate neuroscience education is traditionally Flexnerian: a basic science course, followed by clinical experiences. With newer models such as LICs, neuroscience education must adapt to ensure students can achieve the objectives recommended by the AAN Core Curriculum.

CUSOM has transformed the entire 4-year curriculum (“Trek”) and comprises a 1-year, pre-clerkship phase (“Plains”) with integrated basic and clinical sciences; a 1-year clerkship phase (“Foothills”) utilizing LICs; and a 2-year post-clerkship phase (“Alpine & Summit”) featuring advanced and individualized courses to create well-rounded clinicians and health care leaders. We were tasked with overhauling neuroscience education across this new curriculum.
Using the continuous Designed Based Research cycle, we 1) Reflected on the existing curriculum, 2) Designed tools to integrate neuroscience education, are 3) Testing with pilots, and 4) Evaluating after launch. Planned outcomes include student satisfaction, feasibility measures, and entrustment-based evaluation.  
Priorities of quality neuroscience education and early integration of key topics were established during reflection. In the Design phase, foundational neuroscience was incorporated into the pre-clerkship phase. During the LIC, key neurological conditions such as weakness, headache, and stroke are taught by neuroscience faculty. In the Post-Clerkship phase, all students complete the Advanced Integrated Science Course, where advanced clinical and didactic neuroscience learning is interwoven with core content from cardiology, immunology, and global health.
AAN recommendations were successfully integrated into a novel undergraduate medical curriculum at the CUSOM. Clinical neurosciences were integrated into the LIC and Advanced Integrated Science Course, providing early, meaningful exposure for students to cultivate interest in neuroscience specialties. Next steps include evaluation of student and faculty satisfaction and entrustment-based evaluation of clinical neuroscience outcomes.
