 1. Determine rate of eventual publication of randomized double blind clinical trials (RCT) reported in abstract form at annual meetings of the American Epilepsy Society 2. Determine the quality of abstracts using the appropriate CONSORT statement

Abstracts presented at national conferences have variable rates of subsequent publication in full-length format though rates are higher for randomized double blind clinical trials. Rates of publications of trial abstracts and their quality have not been recently reported in epilepsy.
RCT abstracts from annual meetings of the AES from 2010 to 2019 were hand selected. We used PubMed using first author, last author, title and related keywords to determine publication status. The abstract was then manually reviewed with comparison to the CONSORT checklist to determine alignment with guidelines and if any checklist items were missing.
Of 37 identified abstracts,36 were published. No single study fulfilled all the requirements from the CONSORT checklist. The title, outcome results and conclusions were described by all studies. However none of the abstracts included the contact information of the authors or the current trial recruitment status. Almost all the abstracts described the trial design(97.3%),objectives(97.3%),interventions(94.7%),randomization (94.7%) and endpoints (94.7%). Clearly defined primary and secondary outcomes and trial registration were described in 50% and 55.2% of the studies respectively. Number of participants analysed was reported by 63.1% of all studies. Description of the participants, harms of the study and the funding was reported in 68.4% of abstracts.

Almost all of the abstracts presented at AES meetings went on to be published in PubMed indexed journals. Room for improvement exists in conforming more fully with CONSORT criteria for abstract reporting.
