To describe the neurology medical student electives offered at our institution and students’ experiences.
There is a growing need for more neurologists in the United States yet neurology remains a less popular specialty for medical students to consider for residency. Earlier exposure to a wide variety of neurological electives at the medical student level may help foster interest in neurology.
The following two-week medical student neurology electives have been developed and offered to medical students at our institution: clinical neurology consult service, clinical outpatient neurology, movement and memory disorders, headache medicine, vascular neurology, neuro-oncology, EEG/epilepsy, neurocritical care, clinical research in Parkinson’s disease, and neurology telehealth. A new virtual neurology elective for visiting URiM scholars is now also available. Data on overall feedback including negative experiences was collected through automated evaluations sent to students.
A total of 49 students completed neurology electives between the 2019-2020 (n=17) and 2020-2021 (n=32) academic years. Electives with the highest student participation included neurocritical care, movement and memory disorders and headache. A total of 55 student evaluations for elective courses were available for viewing starting from July 2018. 46 students rated their electives as “excellent”, 7 as “very good”, and 2 as “good”. Available subjective feedback included comments on attendings’ eagerness to teach, having the opportunity to see diverse and complex cases, and being able to reinforce concepts in neurology. Some students wanted more autonomy in history-taking and doing the physical exam (seen among different electives).

A diverse and unique host of electives is available to medical students at our institution. Over 83% of available student evaluations starting from July 2018 revealed an excellent neurology elective experience. Medical student neurology electives can often help students solidify their specialty choice, introduce them to subspecialties, and help students develop meaningful relationships with mentors in the field.
