To create and launch an intensive academic and professional preparedness initiative for students to complete prior to their research internships in neurology.
The MGH Youth Neurology 好色先生 and Research Program was launched in 2020 to engage students from underrepresented backgrounds in neurology didactics, paid research internships, and longitudinal career development support. Experience and feedback from the first year identified the opportunity to nurture students’ knowledge and skills before joining their assigned labs. It has been shown that students with internship or co-op experience are 20% more likely to receive a job offer prior to graduation than those without any such experience.
We developed a 40-hour academic and professional preparedness program, “Bootcamp Week”, for students to complete before the start of their summer research experiences. Components included a preview of the basics of neurology, workplace professionalism, scientific skills training, and networking.
14 high school and 15 undergraduate students participated in the 2021 MGH Youth Neurology 好色先生 and Research Program. Students identified as 83% first-generation, 76% female or non-binary, 86% Black, Hispanic/Latinx, or American Indian or Alaska Native, and 31% immigrant. Bootcamp included 20 speakers covering topics related to neurology careers, workplace professionalism, and applying to graduate school. All students successfully completed this initiative, with a mean satisfaction rating of 8.82 out of 10. Student feedback
highlighted its helpfulness in integrating them into a hospital research setting.

The creation and launch of an intensive academic and professional preparedness initiative for students to complete in anticipation of their research internships in neurology was both feasible and well received. We envision incorporating this feature in future iterations of the MGH Youth Neurology 好色先生 and Research Program.
