The objective was to assess the overall direct cost of stroke management in the neurology department of the Ignace Deen National Hospital.

In Guinea, the management of strokes constitutes a real financial problem for the patient and his family, insofar as social security does not cover the entire population

The study was carried out in the neurology department of the Ignace Deen national hospital in Conakry. The study was prospective, descriptive, focusing on patients hospitalized for stroke during the period from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2023. The cost was expressed in Guinean Francs (GNF) which is the currency used in Guinea (1Euro = 10,600 GNF in January 2020), it does not include the cost of surgical treatment or that of thrombolysis. The data was collected on an information collection sheet. The variables were qualitative and quantitative.

According to our study, we found a total direct cost of 515,107,000 GNF with an average equal to 5,151,070 GNF, (€ 424.23); the average costs of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes were respectively: 4,974,092 GNF and 5,687,140 GNF. Medicines represented 51.8% of the overall cost of I stroke and the total cost of additional examinations made 37.4% of the overall cost of I stroke.

The cost of stroke is considerable for patients, at a time when the family is the only source of expenditure with an insufficient minimum wage; however, the majority of its patients are unemployed.
