Child Neurology and Developmental Neurology
Participants should be familiar with the clinical presentation of those metabolic disorders (e.g., methylmalonic and propionic acidemia) and neurodegenerative conditions (e.g., Krabbe disease, Menkes disease and Pompe disease) where new treatments are being proposed, but are often only effective when started early in infancy. The history of newborn screening will be outlined and there will be discussion on newborn screening as a public health mandate which is considerably influenced by parental and professional advocacy groups as well as industry; the clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, treatment options, and long-term management and counseling issues of the more frequently encountered inborn errors of energy metabolism and storage disorders; be able to develop a general approach to the use of the genetic laboratory; and understand the utility of biochemical analyses and enzymatic assays.
