Participants should be familiar with the best therapeutic options available for the management of new-onset epilepsy, generalized epilepsy, and intractable partial epilepsy; be able to choose the optimal antiepileptic drug for an individual patient based on seizure type and epilepsy syndrome; develop treatment plans for special populations with epilepsy such as children, women, and older adults; recognize the common acute and chronic adverse effects of antiepileptic drugs; discuss the timing of referral of patients for epilepsy surgical evaluation or implantation of the vagus nerve stimulator; apply evidence-based approaches to the management of epilepsy; and recognize areas of controversy and uncertainty.
