Epilepsy/Clinical Neurophysiology (EEG)
Participants should be able to develop approaches to the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of patients with sleep disorders likely to be encountered in general neurology practice; generate a differential diagnosis for patients who present to the office with hypersomnia, insomnia, and parasomnias, including abnormal motor activities during sleep; recognize the utility and limitations of sleep laboratory testing; and update their knowledge of therapeutic options for common sleep disorders. Participants will also be expected to: develop an understanding of the basic neurophysiologic mechanism for sleep and wakefulness; gain familiarity with the common sleep disorders comorbid in neurology; become familiar with sleep disorders that may result from underlying neurologic conditions and are directly attributable to the disorder itself or from treatment of the underlying condition; and identify neurologic consequences of untreated sleep disturbances.
