Participants should be able to apply classifications of seizures and epilepsy to guide diagnostic evaluation and treatment of these conditions; differentiate the advantages and disadvantages between older and newer antiepileptic drugs; distinguish between epileptic seizures, pseudoseizures, and other mimicking spells; manage seizures and epilepsy before, during, and after pregnancy; decide on the appropriate options for treating antiepileptic drug-resistant epilepsy; recognize distinctive diagnostic and treatment issues in managing seizures in children; determine the proper diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of acute seizures; and advise patients on their treatment options and prognosis when a period of seizure remission has been achieved.
